The most prominent provider of educational programming on American public television is PBS. It is a non-commercial, free-to-air television network that is publicly funded and owned by the United States government. It's based in Arlington, Virginia and its shows include This Old House, Frontline, Sesame Street and Nova.
PBS is funded by donations from individual citizens, private foundations and member stations. All funding proposals are subject to a set of standards to make sure the funding source has no effect on the program. These standards include adherence to educational standards, state regulations, pledge drives, member station dues and local public school district or collegiate institution ownership. Over 350 member stations accept donations through PBS; many are owned by educational institutions, nonprofit groups or associated with a particular state government.
