Zvezda (Russian: Всероссийский государственный вещательный telеканал) is a Russian state-run national television network operated by the Russian Ministry of Defense. As of January 2008, Zvezda's CEO is Grigory Krichevsky, previously known for his work on Vladimir Gusinsky's NTV channel in the late 1990s.
In 1998, the Central Television Broadcasting Studio of the Russian Ministry of Defense won the competition to broadcast the channel. On July 17, 2000, the Zvezda channel was licensed to broadcast. On February 20, 2005, Radio Zvezda launched its first broadcast on UHF channel 57 in Moscow. On May 16, 2005, the channel began broadcasting 24/7. In 2006, Zvezda first aired in Russia. In 2007, the channel's ratings continued to grow as it was included in the NTV+ package. Zvezda has been a federal identity channel since 2009.
